About Fruitvale

In the late 1800s, a section within east Oakland was called Fruit Vale. It earned its name from the many apricot and cherry orchards found within its borders. Later, the area was renamed Fruitvale and annexed by the City of Oakland in 1909. Fruitvale is located on the east side of Oakland and is roughly a couple of miles east of Lake Merritt. The neighborhood’s boundaries include Highway 880, Fruitvale Avenue, International Boulevard, and High Street, and is centered on the Fruitvale BART Station.
